Historically a small mill town, Cramerton’s development policies have for decades upheld the original founder’s vision to build a compact, walkable community. Residents today can walk and bike nearly anywhere within town limits, including downtown, local businesses, recreation centers, schools, and grocery stores, while active living and healthy eating opportunities continue to expand. Town leaders encouraged developers to convert a historic building near downtown into senior housing, enabling future residents to reach daily needs on foot; incentives for downtown renovation projects have attracted new businesses, including healthy food establishments. Cramerton also worked with school district officials to locate a new high school near the town center and required bicycle and pedestrian connections in the school design. Thanks to leadership from the Recreation Commission, the town has made significant investments in park facilities and diverse recreational programs, while also increasing healthy options in its concessions stands and vending machines. Progress continues on an interconnected greenway system that will become a component of the Carolina Thread Trail and already connects residents to a rich array of outdoor recreation amenities.
