The City of Goldsboro is changing the way residents think about healthy eating and active living. It boasts five community gardens in walkable locations as well as a mobile farmers market, thanks to strong partnerships with the Wayne Foods Initiative and the local health department. The former, a growing grassroots initiative, started as an after-school program to provide children skills to grow their own food. Youth participants and leaders in the program continually expand the number of community gardens and help individual citizen build gardens in their own yards, while other health partners have made healthy eating and cooking education programs widely available, especially in worksite and faith based locations. Goldsboro supports physically active lifestyles through events and festivals at city parks throughout the year, policies that prioritize sidewalk and greenway connections between important destinations in existing and new neighborhoods, and abundant park and recreational facilities that support a range of classes for people of all ages. In fact, all homes are located within ¼ mile of a park.
