Mount Airy worked for years to complete the Ararat River Greenway, Restoration, and Parks project that will soon connect two schools and an environmental education park. It is the newest support system for active living in a town that has long prioritized compact development and a connected sidewalk network. Cooperative partnerships are a hallmark of the city’s ability to put active lifestyles within reach of so many citizens: a joint-use agreement exists between schools and parks, a local foundation supports recreational program scholarships for disadvantaged children, and the city collaborated with downtown merchants to create “Start With Your Heart” walking routes with signage and maps to encourage active transportation. Grocery stores use the same logo to promote healthy food choices, and provide healthy cooking tours and demonstrations. Mount Airy’s innovative Parks and Recreation Department created and continues to offer an award-winning Losing-4-Life program that provides healthy eating counseling and structured physical activity opportunities.
