Oak Island has been a leader in promoting healthy lifestyles, and the town’s own employees walk the talk. The Wellness Committee, a partnership among municipal departments, implemented workplace policies and incentives that increased physical activity among employees. Oak Island also has a strong Parks and Recreation tradition. The community features a teen center with popular and age-appropriate physical activity programs, and a large new regional park with diverse recreational offerings. Community partners also support access to healthy food, including free summer lunch programs for children and year-round programs for senior citizens. Thanks to a bicycle master plan, town leaders have successfully encouraged developers to plan for connected routes across the community, further helping residents to achieve healthy lifestyles.
