An urban setting with a downtown waterfront, Wilmington is an ideal city for active transportation. Leaders aim to expand pedestrian and bicycle access across the community; the Cross-City Trail greenway initiative will provide a 10-mile multi-use trail through the heart of Wilmington and is supported by local developers. The city also ensures that all new and resurfaced roads accommodate bicycles, and that all new developments include sidewalks. To encourage physical activity, Cape Fear Healthy Carolinians created the “Wilmington Walks” program, with marked walking routes and maps in three city neighborhoods. Healthy eating is emphasized through the Riverfront Farmers Market, which provides opportunities to purchase fresh local produce. City policy requires healthy food options at all meetings, and the parks department now works exclusively with vendors that offer healthy vending machine options. In local schools, leaders are improving nutrition via new classroom curriculum, eliminating fryers from elementary and middle schools, and providing fresh fruits and vegetables daily.
